Super Natura has finished the first two acts of the film just in time for graduation!  I held test screenings at Calarts and its always amazing to see your film through the eyes of your audience.  I can see just where people are captivated, and what may be missing….all great information to have as I move into the final production phase for the film.  For the moment I just want to say thank you to everyone who have supported this film and thanks Calarts for such a wild and engaging experience.  Attending was one of the best choices I have ever made, and I’m proud to be a graduate!  Woohooo!

Here is an introduction to Super Natura’s main character…an overconfident and foolhardy grasshopper setting out to have the adventure of his life.  This moment is a reflection of his own childhood…he remembers being the best jumper, and that none of his siblings even survived infancy.

Animated dead bug on decorative Kale.  Shot with a macro lens on a Canon 5D Markii body.  This is why the film moves so slow folks, I spent over two hours animating this clip ; )

Characters for Super Natura begin here!  Super excited to bring these creatures back to life…

Here is an animation test for Super Natura.  Some of the scenes are funny, some of the scenes are scary.  This is a narrative moment, where the bugs of the field learn they can’t eat the grass anymore…

Here’s a little opening scene peak for you.  This is a low res h.264 compression video, the real thing is in HD.

Letter to Deyrolle

One of the things that could really help Super Natura would be some sort of sponsorship from Deyrolle.  Today I wrote to them to ask if they would be interested.  Letter below, and if you speak French, by all means, tell me how I’m doing!

Bonjour Cher Deyrolle,

Gina Kelly

To the left is one of the bug puppets fabricated for test shooting.  A grasshopper with beautiful wings from Paris Taxidermy store Deyrolle.  Its entire body is rigged with wire so that I can control its movement.

You can learn about Super Natura by clicking on this picture.  In short, its a stop motion animation film that is kind of a surreal version of BBC’s Life in the Undergrowth, with puppets that were made by using real insects.  Surrealism at its best, with a touch of California sun, wonder, and mythical narrative all wrapped into one short film.
Pre-production for this film is funded by the Kickstarter campaign.  Donations begin at $1, with reward packages starting at $2.  For $50, you will receive a DVD of the film, a poster for the film silk screened by hand, a letter of appreciation, and thanks in the film’s credits.  Rewards at all levels.
